No, it means you expressed sentiment towards a person, hoping to affect them in a manner that garners a response. I think an insult is an insult if it is SEEN as an insult. If you call someone a whale, maybe the person won't see it much of an insult, and you'd probably see it as an insult, just not a very good one lol. Everything is what an individual thinks it is. They might think a cow is a dog and a dog a cow, or a cow a cow and a dog a dog. When you look at it all, a name is something to express or represent something or someone else, just as a numeral is used to express the idea of a 'number'. Therefore an insult is what you make of an action.

Now to the intention of an 'insult' can, as been stated, to state superiority and lower a person's self esteem (usually). I think whether the intention is to do so or the intention is met makes an insult what it is. The action, if seen as an insult, is an insult.
